PROJECT INFORMATION

Using Read-a-Thon to Fundraise

Every year, the Woodsdale Elementary School Student Council chooses a new service project. This year’s project included a student council Fundraiser for a book vending machine. Their fundraiser was a school read-a-thon.

The student council had a goal of raising $7,000. After reaching out to local businesses for donations, the students launched a Read-a-Thon fundraiser!

Read-a-Thon’s web-based program made their book vending machine fundraiser easy. Anyone, anywhere, could donate and support student readers. By the time the campaign was finished, the school raised well over its $7,000 goal.

CHALLENGES

What were their goals?

Woodsdale Student Council's Goal was raising $7,000.00 for their book vending machine.

Inchy's Bookworm Vending Machine will be used “for positive reinforcement” at the Woodsdale. Teachers will reward students academic and behavioral achievements with a gold Inchy Token. Students then have the opportunity to use that token to vend a new book.

“For example, if their reading goals are met the student will get a token and go pick out a book,” Teacher  Jamie Young told a news source. “The extra funding we receive will go toward purchasing books to start and in the future.”

How Were Goals Achieved?

Woodsdale Elementary School students successfully raised over $7,500 through their school-wide Read-A-Thon fundraiser.

The student council organized the event and also successfully approached local businesses for sponsorships.

Each student solicited pledges for the Read-A-Thon, with donors having the option to make a flat contribution or offer dollars for each book read.

An awards assembly will be held to announce and reward class and individual winners, with the top homeroom representative getting to pie the principal.

Other prizes, including a climbing pass from the Highlands Sports Complex, will be distributed to students who collected the most donations.

"The student council takes on service projects every year. This idea popped up and we just ran with it. So, we decided to sponsor a ‘Read-A-Thon’ to try to raise funds to get money for our first reading vending machine."
