The Chargers' first Bookworm went to Bell Gardens.

On September 28, 2026 the Chargers Impact Fund unveiled a Bolts Book Club wrapped Bookworm at the Bell Gardens Boys & Girls Club. It went to the clubhouse that read the most books in the Bolts Book Club Summer Reading Challenge.

We just donated our very first book vending machine to the Boys and Girls Club in Bell Gardens, going to the Clubhouse that read the most books this summer.

The ask

A prize that keeps giving books

Bolts Book Club is the Chargers Impact Fund's literacy program. Since 2020 it has put more than 25,000 free books in the hands of Southern California students, more than 7,000 of them in 2025 alone. The Chargers have partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles for more than seven years, from a revitalized field and teen center at Watts/Willowbrook to player read-alouds at the clubs.

In summer 2026 the Impact Fund ran a Bolts Book Club Summer Reading Challenge across the clubs. The prize for the clubhouse that read the most books was not another box of books. It was a machine that gives books away every day.

An Inchy's Bookworm Vending Machine turns a one-day giveaway into a year-round reward. Club members earn golden tokens for the things staff want to see more of, walk up, drop the token in, and pick the book they take home and keep.

Launch day

Larry English, a pizza party and a red carpet

On Monday, September 28, 2026 the Chargers unveiled the machine at the Bell Gardens Boys & Girls Club. Chargers Legend Larry English joined the celebration, which also recognized the clubhouse for winning the Summer Reading Challenge with a pizza party and a special reading. The team posted it simply: their very first book vending machine, going to the clubhouse that read the most books that summer.

The photos tell the rest. A red carpet, gold stanchions and velvet rope in front of the machine, a Bolts Book Club banner, a wall of powder blue balloons and a room full of kids waiting for the first token.

That is the scene our Red Carpet Ribbon Cutting kit is built to create. It ships with six posters, a banner stand, five floor graphics, four stanchions with two velvet ropes, a 3x5 red carpet, oversized ceremonial scissors and a big ribbon, plus a resource guide, a media advisory template, a press release template and an email pitch template. A cause marketing team gets a launch that looks like a launch, with the invitations and press materials already written.

Turnkey

What Bookvending handled

The Bell Gardens machine wears the Chargers' powder blue with the Bolts Book Club and Impact Fund marks on the front. That wrap is the first thing our design team builds from a sponsor's brand guide, and the sponsor signs off on the artwork before anything is printed.

From there the program runs as one workflow. Bookvending coordinates freight and delivery to the site, stocks the opening book inventory to match the ages in the building, ships the golden tokens and trains the club staff who will run it. Inchy's Help Center and live video support cover the life of the machine at no charge, and curated book bundles make restocking a few clicks.

A sponsor's team does not need a project manager for any of it. They pick the site, approve the wrap and show up to the unveiling.

The long game

From a summer challenge to every day

The Chargers Impact Fund has awarded more than $12 million in direct community assistance since the Spanos family founded it in 1995. A reading challenge ends in August. The machine it funded will sit in the Bell Gardens clubhouse for years, handing out a book every time a kid earns one.

That is why pro sports foundations and corporate giving teams keep choosing a Bookworm:

  • It is concrete. The sponsor knows exactly what the dollars built. There is a machine, there are books, there are kids holding them.
  • It is visible. A custom wrapped machine stays in a hallway for 10 to 20 years, in front of every member and every parent who walks in.
  • It is sustainable. The club refills it year after year with new titles. The original gift keeps producing readers long after the press release.
  • It is easy to launch. Bookvending handles the design, the books, the freight and the launch support.

The 49ers Foundation, the Charlotte Hornets with Bank of America and the Erik Jones Foundation run the same play. Pick a site. Fund a machine. Stock it. Show up to the unveiling.
